Day 81 – May 19, 2010

My friend Misty posted this to Facebook the other day:

It is one of the funniest/grossest sites I’ve ever seen and it definitely has me terrified of parenthood. I’ll be honest, there have been times throughout my pregnancy when I’ve thought “Oh God…what have I gotten myself into?!” I feel bad for admitting this, but from what I’ve read, it’s pretty normal to feel a small sense of dread at some points during your pregnancy. In fact, they even blame it on the hormones. So…maybe that means I’m not a horrible person? I hope not. I am definitely excited, but the excitement is equally met with fear. Will I be a good mom? How will I know what to do after I leave the hospital? Will I gag while changing diapers? (yes…this is really a question I have haha)

We’ve had nothing but positive comments and encouragement from friends and family. Many people have told us we’ll make great parents, but whenever I hear that I think “what makes you so sure?”

I don’t know. I guess this is my confession blog. I’m totally afraid of becoming a mom. There, I said it….well…typed it anyways.

Ah, the parental fear. It’s what drives us to be great parents. No worries, and your fears will be dispelled periodically. New ones come up, and the existing ones are conquered.
The reason folks think you’ll be great parents is because you and Benji don’t sweat the small stuff. That is key. Whether you think you have the goods or not, in small things, people have seen the goods in both of you.
As for gagging, sure, you will. But not at first. The early diapers are amazingly easy. When you start feeding the baby real food is when the gagging begins. I recommend holding off till at least 5 months of age 🙂
Oh, and I could change anything BEFORE I had kids. Now, I can handle my own, but anyone else’s diapers make me want to vomit.
Honestly, the biggest gripping fear moment was driving away from the hospital. Jamey and I looked at each other like, “Well, it’s on us now.” Heck yeah, it’s on us 😉

yea girl, Nicole is right….I gagged tonight changing Ryder’s poo THREE FREAKIN TIMES in 3 hours! Good Lord!

get ready. My dad used to wear a mask over his face when he changed us.

I can answer those questions. You will probably gag when you change some of those diapers, I did when I changed you and I like to think I was not that horrible of a mother because you grew up to be an awesome daughter. I know I have to give God the credit for that but I like to think I helped too. You will be the best mom ever because you were such a little mommy to your siblings and you never seemed to grow tired of always wanting to feed, change or hold them. You didn’t even mind at 2AM when Amanda woke you up, you always just wanted to help so that’s how I know you will be the best mom my grandbaby could have. When Amanda was a baby there were times that I thought I could just leave her with you and not have to worry because you knew exactly what to do. Of course I would have never done that since you were 9 but I always thought it was funny that you seemed to know just what she wanted even if I didn’t.

Aw! Thanks Maw! I still remember when Amanda was tiny. I remember one Saturday morning we were in your room while you were getting ready and she fell asleep on my chest. I loved that moment. She was so cute…now she’s just mean hahahaha JK!!!

  5. Here’s how I know you and Benji will make GREAT parents. Because the best gift you can give your children is to love your spouse and raise those children in a loving, supportive home. You and Benji are such an incredible couple. I feel so blessed to call you friends. The best part in this whole parenting thing is that you two will learn the ropes together. So what if you gag with a few diapers? It IS poop! Hello??? 🙂 So what if they mess up a cellphone? So what if they sharpie on the counter tops? Kids do that kind of stuff. But just knowing that someday when they REALLY mess up with things (bad grades, bad decisions, etc.) that you and Benji are there, THAT is what it is all about. You two have got this. 🙂 I promise.
